We are guided by our values: Expertise, Collaboration, Excellence in Service, and Respect for Place & People.
We are seeking a Financial Controller to join our team within our Mississauga location.
The Financial Controller runs the finance function at Arctic Kingdom. The department is this person and a part-time bookkeeper, so the role covers everything from the bank reconciliation to the conversation with the President about whether a product is making money.
This is a hands-on finance leadership role for someone who is equally comfortable contributing to strategic business decisions and rolling up their sleeves to manage the day-to-day financial operations of the business. The ideal candidate has an entrepreneurial mindset, strong financial and accounting fundamentals, and a genuine interest in understanding how the business operates.
Someone who only wants the strategic half, or only the accounting half, will not be a good fit.
The Controller sits on the Senior Management Team and works most closely with the President and the VP of Performance & Excellence.
This Role Will Be Responsible For The Following
Leadership and Business Support
- Sit on the Senior Management Team and bring financial insight to the development, monitoring and evaluation of overall company strategy.
- Learn how the business really works, including its operating model, products, seasons, culture, roles and responsibilities, and use that to give the President useful analysis and clear recommendations.
- Raise financial risks, process gaps and opportunities for improvement early, and come with a practical suggestion for dealing with them.
Budgets, Forecasts and Profitability
- Prepare and maintain cash-flow forecasts, budgets, financial forecasts and management reports, so leadership can understand how the business is doing and make informed decisions.
- Work with the VP of Performance & Excellence on annual product budgets, pricing, revenue and sales targets, and profitability analysis.
- Look at revenue, margins, costs and operational performance to find where product and company profitability can improve.
- Build and improve financial models, reports and templates that managers and staff can use in their daily work.
Accounting and Multi-Entity Management
- Run full-cycle accounting in QuickBooks Online: AP, AR, bank and credit card reconciliations, prepaids, inventory, journal entries, intercompany transactions and financial reporting.
- Manage financial activity and intercompany transactions across all five legal entities, and make sure they are reconciled and properly recorded.
- Lead and keep improving financial processes, internal controls, reporting and workflows so the company stays efficient and can scale.
- Keep financial records and confidential documents organized and secure.
Payroll, Tax and Compliance
- Process payroll in Dayforce for full-time, hourly and temporary employees, and handle the related work, including ROEs, commissions, benefits and T4s.
- Look after GST/HST, RST and QST filings.
- Handle WSIB, WSCC and WorkplaceNL reporting and related requirements.
Year-End and Outside Relationships
- Lead the year-end process, including review engagements and/or audits, and act as the main finance contact for external accountants and auditors.
- Maintain good working relationships with lenders, government agencies, suppliers and, now and then, customers.
- Look for funding, financing, grants and other programs open to the company or the tourism industry.
Qualifications
- CPA designation in good standing.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or a related field.
- At least five years in a finance leadership role.
- At least two years of recent, hands-on, full-cycle accounting.
- Solid working knowledge of accounting systems.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow management, financial reporting and analysis.
- Working knowledge of payroll practices and benefits administration.
- Advanced Excel, particularly for financial modelling, data analysis and reporting.
- Able to turn financial information into clear, practical recommendations for non-financial leaders.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, and able to manage a high volume of communications, transactions and competing deadlines.
- Flexible and adaptable, and willing to challenge existing processes when there is a better way.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfortable in a small, entrepreneurial office where responsibilities can extend beyond a traditional Controller role.
- Able to pass a criminal record check and a credit check.
Preferred Qualifications
- QuickBooks Online, or Dayforce experience (strongly preferred).
- Tourism or travel industry experience.
- Multi-entity accounting experience.
